A refreshment post from 1680, now a working family suburb
Blinds, roller shutters and zip screens measured and specified for Kuils River's mix of spacious and compact family homes, bordering our Kraaifontein home ground to the south.
From de Kuijlen to a modern commuter suburb
Kuils River's roots run back to 1680, when it served as a Dutch East India Company refreshment post known as de Kuijlen, or De Boss — the name itself comes from the pools, or "kuils," along the river. A proper road followed in 1845, a railway station in 1862, and a school in 1898, and the area grew steadily from there into the mixed suburb it is today: a genuine blend of larger, older freestanding homes and more compact, newer stock on the same streets, rather than one uniform housing type.
How we specify for Kuils River
That mix is the defining fact for a measure here — a street can run from a spacious older stand with big, original aluminium sliding windows to a newer, tighter infill home with standard-size openings, sometimes side by side. We treat every Kuils River enquiry as its own measure rather than assuming a neighbour's spec will match, checking window age, size and fixing type room by room. The climate story is the same one that shapes the rest of our Kraaifontein-area work: wet winters rather than summer hail, a Cape Doctor south-easter that picks up from September through the summer months, and low winter sun that punishes west-facing glass more than a fixed eave ever will — so blockout or double roller blinds and wind-rated exterior products get specified on the same logic here as everywhere else in this belt.
Two houses on the same Kuils River street can need genuinely different blinds — one still has its original 1980s aluminium sliders, the other was rebuilt five years ago.
On-site measure, Kuils River- Window age, size and fixing type checked room by room, not assumed street-wide
- Blockout or double roller for west-facing rooms catching the low winter sun
- Wind-rated zip screens and awnings for patios facing the Cape Doctor
- No hail-season claims here — this is a wind-and-winter-rain climate, not a Highveld one
